How long does the Bible tell us the earth will continue to exist?
He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved. – Pslam 104:5
Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever. – Ecclesiastes 1:4
He built his sanctuary like the heights, like the earth that he established forever. – Psalm 78:69
The above passages indicate that the physical earth will always exist. Words like ‘remain forever’, ‘established forever’, and ‘never be moved’ would signify permanence. While the physical earth may last forever, the ‘age’ of humans may not. So, the end of the age is not necessarily an end to the physical world but an end to life as we know it.
When that end comes, maybe the earth will change from it’s present course in the universe. Given the awesome power of God, I believe that God could move the earth from it’s axis and the results would be consistent with scripture. A change in its position in the universe would definitely mean an end to life as we know it on the planet, everything on the surface of the earth would be annihilated.
Therefore I will make the heavens tremble; and the earth will shake from its place at the wrath of the LORD Almighty, in the day of his burning anger. – Isaiah 13:13
See, the LORD is going to lay waste the earth and devastate it he will ruin its face and scatter its inhabitants …… The earth will be completely laid waste and totally plundered. The LORD has spoken this word. The earth dries up and withers, the world languishes and withers, the exalted of the earth languish. The earth is defiled by its people; they have disobeyed the laws, violated the statutes and broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore a curse consumes the earth; its people must bear their guilt. Therefore earth’s inhabitants are burned up, and very few are left. – Isiah 24:1,3-6
The fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the beasts of the field, every creature that moves along the ground, and all the people on the face of the earth will tremble at my presence. The mountains will be overturned, the cliffs will crumble and every wall will fall to the ground. – Ezekiel 38:20
The earth will become desolate because of its inhabitants, as the result of their deeds. – Mic 7:13
” I will sweep away everything from the face of the earth,” declares the LORD. “I will sweep away both men and animals; I will sweep away the birds of the air and the fish of the sea. The wicked will have only heaps of rubble when I cut off man from the face of the earth,” declares the LORD. – Zeph 1:2,3
No one will be able to escape the final days of the earth.
Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to save them on the day of the Lord’s wrath. In the fire of his jealousy the whole world will be consumed, for he will make a sudden end of all who live in the earth. – Zeph 1:18
