Hero Worship
“Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart.” – Psalm 119:2
Good morning brothers and sisters. I read our verse and think of a hero. What does someone do with a hero?
In my head I see a child who has a hero. Just for an example let us say this child is a young lad who loves baseball. Since I am a Reds fan the lad will be too. On the team is a pitcher named Wade Miley. Earlier this year Wade threw a no-hitter. What a splendid night that was. Yes I listened to that game.
This lad, I will call him Carl, how will we know Wade is his hero? Likely he will show off his Wade Miley baseball cards. For Carl game time means turn on the TV or radio and enjoy the game, especially if Wade is pitching. Maybe he will own a jersey with Wade’s number on it. He might wear Reds pajamas. Perhaps he even follows the related ads, thus he loves JTM sandwich steaks, Con’s hotdogs, and Skyline Chillie.
Now if I offer to take Carl to a game where Wade will be pitching how will Carl react? And if I can get Wade to sign the baseball card won’t Carl just go nuts? But let us say I can arrange dinner with Wade after the game. Will Carl want to go home or will he beg mom and dad to let him come with us? I am quite sure you know the answer. Carl will likely try to pitch like Wade, dress like Wade, maybe even want to spit tobacco like Wade. Well I hope not, but you get the point. That kid has a one track mind.
“Blessed are they who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart.” Sounds like maybe Jesus is the hero of this blessed group of people. So do we want to be like Carl, having our entire focus on our hero? Does the Bible go where you go so that you can read and know? When Jesus says do this do you eagerly do it? And what about following his example, provided for us in the gospels? Jesus himself said to seek and you will find, but are you seeking?
A real hero worship changes the worshiper. Carl bases his activities on this Wade Miley dude. Not real healthy for the lad, however, he gives us quite the picture of seeking and worshiping. Is this how we are with our Lord? Is he the most important of all or is he simply our Sunday pal? This may be the most important relationship you can ever have, so is that how you see it or maybe not? Will you follow his example and seek to please him? Something to ponder as you move through this day.
