Christ is the Goal
“Dear friends we are already God’s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will then see him as he really is.” – 1John 3:2
“And all that have this eager expectation will keep themselves pure just as he is pure.” – 1John 3:3
In football you have the goal posts. And the object of the game is to get that football to that point on the field. You know the goal, however, unless you get there you do not experience victory. You can hold the ball in your hands, yet victory doesn’t come simply by holding the ball, wearing the team uniform, even showing up for the game. Victory only comes when you take the ball to the goal.
If you want to understand victory then you must make it to the goal.
So our text reminds you and me that we are God’s children, yet it also reminds us that we do not know all there is to know about Jesus or about being like him. We ain’t there yet. And true likeness will only be achieved when Christ returns to take us home. Then we shall finally experience him as he really is.
Now as a result we should live according to the goal. Christ is the goal. We press on day by day. When we achieve, that is when we finally meet up with Jesus, then we will truly understand Christ and we will be like him. Experience matters and we have yet to experience that perfecting that he is doing in us. God will make us what we shall be. We now know in part, but then we will understand and experience true victory and life.
That said, we also have a task, to live a pure life. I think we are talking here about pure motives. To God be the glory. Our motivation as Christians should be to be like Jesus. While we sure haven’t mastered this we still should put forth the effort.
